ICE CANDleS

You will need:

  • one large and one small container - the smaller container should fit inside the larger container with plenty of room and should be about the diameter of the candle you wish to use.

  • water

  • botanicals or other items for decoration

  • flat board (we used a wooden spatula)

  • stones or other objects to use as weights

  • candle

We’ve made an ice candle sized for a tea light, but you can create them in any size!

On cold nights, you can even use large buckets and let them freeze outdoors. These larger ice candles create stunning lanterns when nestled in the snow – just remember to monitor them carefully to prevent any fire hazards.

How to make:

  1. Take the large container (like a measuring cup) and fill with water, leaving about 3cm space at the top for expansion during freezing.

  2. Place a stone/s in a smaller container (like an empty jar) that matches the diameter of a tea light.

  3. Now position the weighted container inside the larger one. Place a board on top with a weight to keep everything steady. The small container should naturally float—this creates space underneath for the ice candle's base to form.

  4. Add your choice of decorative elements—fresh flowers and herbs work best as they sink more readily than dried ones.

  5. Place in the freezer or outdoors (if temperature is below freezing) until solid.

  6. Once frozen, remove the ice mould. To release the centre jar, pour very hot (but not boiling) water into it—this will help loosen the surrounding ice. You can also run hot water over the outer container to free the entire ice mould.

  7. Insert a candle in the centre cavity, and light!
